THE CHARACTERISTICS OF GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS WOMEN IN THE OUTPATIENT CLINIC IN HANOI OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY HOSPITAL

Abstract

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is rising rapidly and has adverse impacts on
maternal and child’s health status.
Objectives: To determine characteristics of pregnant
women with GDM visited Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital.
Methodology:
A cross-sectional study with 115 pregnant women visited Hanoi Obstetrics Hospital
interviewed.
Results: The average age of GDM pregnant women was 30.6 ± 4.1 (yrs),
the percentage of women with aged from 25-35 was 83.5% (n=96). Before pregnancy,
the prevalence of overweight (BMI≥23) was 20.1% (n=23), the prevalence of chronic
energy deficiency (BMI<18.5) was 14.7% (n=17). There was 39.1% (n=45) of GDM
women in the first pregnancy and 61.9% (n=70) GDM women in the second pregnancy. The prevalence of GDM pregnant women having physical excercise at least once a
week was 19.1%.
Conclusion: GDM was prevalent among the young age (25-35 years
old), even in women without overweight, and lack of physical activity. There is a need
to conduct nutritional education and communication activities among women of reproductive age for GDM prevention and management.
