THE SITUATION OF MALNUTRITION AMONG ETHNIC MINORITY CHILDREN AGED 25 TO 60 MONTHS IN TWO UPLAND COMMUNES OF BAO YEN DISTRICT, LAO CAI PROVINCE IN 2019

Abstract
A descriptive study was conducted through a cross-sectional survey to describe the
rate of malnutrition in 522 ethnic minority children aged 25 to 60 months in two upland
communes of Bao Yen district, Lao Cai province in 2019. Results: The percentage of
boys and girls participating in the study were 53.1% and 46.9%, respectively. Children
were evenly distributed among age groups from 25-36 months, from 37 to 48 months
and from 49 to 60 months. Stunting, underweight and wasting rate was 42.5%, 24.1%
and 15.1%. There was no difference in malnutrition types between boys and girls with
p> 0.05. Children with at least one form of malnutrition were accounted for 43.7%.
Especially, up to 14.4% of children had all three types of combination, of which the
proportion of girls was 18.4% and of boys was 10.8%. Stunting was highest in children
aged 25-36 months, declining in the 37-48 month age group and then increasing in the
49-60 month age group. Underweight was lowest in the 25-48 month age group and
tended to increase in the 49-60 month group. Wasting was accounted for a high proportion in the 25-48 month age group, slightly decreasing in the 49-60 month age group.
Conclusion: Malnutrition status of ethnic minority children aged 25 to 60 months in
two highland communes of Bao Yen district was still quite high, especially stunting
malnutrition.
