NUTRITION KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES OF OUTPATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES IN THAI BINH PROVINCE

Abstract
The objective of the study was to investigate current nutrition knowledge and practices of people with type 2 diabetes in some representative communes / wards of Thai
Binh Province. A cross-sectional study was conducted in December 2019 in 30 communes / wards representing 3 regions of Thai Binh province, including 2 wards of the
city, 8 communes in coastal area and 20 communes in inner field. In each commune/
ward, 10 patients were randomly selected for the study. A total of 300 diabetes outpatient were recruited. The results showed that 80% of patients knew that they needed
to reduce the intake of starchy foods and animal viscera, 78% knew that they needed
to eat more meat and fish, 90.7% people knew that they should eat more vegetables
and fruits. 91% of patients knew to minimize confectionery, but only 39% knew that
they should not on restricted diet at night. 42% of patients regularly used foods which
were recommended to eat, 30.3% still regularly used foods that needed to be restricted and 20% of patients often used foods that were recommended not to eat.
