Abstract

Aims: To describe nutritional status and determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia by nutritional status, age, and sex among children aged 1–12 years attending Meditec Clinic in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 212 children aged 1–12 years who attended the clinic between July 2024 and June 2026. Of these, 180 had at least one lipid measurement available. Nutritional status was classified using Z-scores based on the WHO 2006 Child Growth Standards and the WHO 2007 Growth Reference. Lipid abnormalities were defined using the 2011 NHLBI cutoffs.

Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 28.3%, while undernutrition affected 9.9% of children. Overall, 26.7% of tested children had at least one lipid abnormality. This prevalence was highest among children with undernutrition (62.5%), compared with those with normal nutritional status (21.4%; p = 0.001). The prevalence among children with overweight or obesity (26.9%) did not differ significantly from that among children with normal nutritional status (p = 0.434). Hypertriglyceridemia affected 50.0% of undernourished versus 8.1% of normal-status children (p = 0.026 across groups).

Conclusion: Overweight and obesity were the predominant nutritional problems; however, dyslipidemia occurred across all three nutritional status groups, with the highest prevalence among children with undernutrition. These findings are exploratory because the undernutrition group was small. If confirmed in larger studies, these findings suggest that pediatric lipid screening should not be restricted to children with overweight or obesity.
