Abstract

Aims: To determine the prevalence, characteristics of anemia and associated factors among parturient women delivering at Bao Thang General Hospital, Lao Cai Province, from January 2024 to December 2024.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 852 parturient women. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin (Hb) < 110 g/L according to WHO; anemia types were classified using MCV, MCH and MCHC from complete blood counts obtained before delivery. Multivariable logistic regression were used to identify associated factors, reported as OR (95%CI) and p.

Results: The overall prevalence of anemia was 28.52%, mostly mild (17.6%) and moderate (10.8%). Normochromic normocytic morphology accounted for 65.3% and microcytic hypochromic for 20.3% of the whole sample; among anemic women, the microcytic hypochromic type predominated (46.9%). In the multivariable model, women had absent or irregular iron supplementation (adjusted OR = 6.30; p < 0.001) and a history of chronic disease (adjusted OR = 1.68; p = 0.016) were independently associated with anemia.

Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia among parturient women in this area remains relatively high. After adjustment, absent or irregular iron supplementation was the strongest factor associated with anemia. Health education and closer monitoring of micronutrient supplementation are needed, particularly for ethnic minority women.
