Abstract

Aims: To assess the nutritional status and describe the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among patients with type 2 diabetes at Nam Dinh Medical Center in 2025.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 205 patients with type 2 diabetes. Participants were interviewed directly using a structured questionnaire to collect information on general characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and blood pressure indicators. Biochemical parameters were obtained from the participants’ blood test results at Nam Dinh Medical Center. Nutritional status was classified according to body mass index (BMI). Factors associated with metabolic syndrome were identified using multivariable logistic regression analysis.

Results: The prevalence of overweight was 37.1%, while chronic energy deficiency was 8.8%. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 65.4%. Age ≥60 years, overweight/obesity, and a duration of diabetes ≥5 years were significantly associated with metabolic syndrome (p < 0.05). In multivariable analysis, only overweight/obesity remained independently associated with metabolic syndrome (OR = 2.85; 95% CI: 1.50–5.40; p = 0.001).

Conclusion: Overweight is highly prevalent among patients with type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is common in this population and is strongly associated with overweight/obesity, older age, and longer disease duration. Strengthening the screening and management of metabolic risk factors is essential to reduce the risk of complications.
