ASSOCIATION BETWEEN NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND ORAL FUNCTION AMONG THE ELDERLY AT TUYET THAI ELDERLY CARE CENTER, HANOI 2023

Abstract
Aims: To describe and identify the association between the nutritional status and oral function among the elderly at Tuyet Thai Elderly Care Center, Hanoi.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 older adults in 2023. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool and calf circumference, while the oral function was examined using the Oral Health Assessment Tool.
Results: Based on the MNA, normal, at-risk, and malnourished proportions were 20.0, 47.0, and 33.0%, respectively. Malnutrition prevalence by calf circumference was 70.0%. For oral function, 65.0% were normal, 32.0% poor, and 3.0% very poor. Compared to the normal oral function group, those with poor/very poor function had significantly higher odds of malnutrition by both MNA (OR = 3.8; 95% CI: 1.0–14.0) and calf circumference (OR = 2.8; 95% CI: 1.0–7.8).
Conclusion: Malnutrition, malnutrition risk, and oral dysfunction are highly prevalent among older adults. Poor/very poor oral function increases the odds of malnutrition risk. Therefore, routine screening and targeted interventions for both nutritional status and oral function are critical in this population.
