PREVALENCE OF MALNUTRITION ACCORDING TO GLIM CRITERIA AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG HOSPITALIZED ONCOLOGY AND SURGICAL PATIENTS AT 19-8 HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Aims: To describe malnutrition classification using the two-step NRS-2002–GLIM approach and direct application of the GLIM criteria to the full sample, and to examine changes in classification when alternative definitions of reduced muscle mass and the etiologic criterion were used among hospitalized oncology and surgical patients at 19-8 Hospital.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 355 adults hospitalized for more than 24 hours at the Oncology Centre and four surgical departments between April and June 2026. Nutritional risk was screened using NRS-2002, and GLIM criteria were determined from clinical and anthropometric information. Results were reported for the two-step approach and for direct application of the GLIM criteria to the full sample. Additional analyses varied the definitions of reduced muscle mass and the etiologic criterion.
Results: Overall, 195/355 patients (54.9%) had NRS-2002 ≥3. Under the two-step approach, 101/355 patients were classified as malnourished (28.5%; 95% CI: 24.0–33.4). Direct application of the GLIM criteria to the full sample classified 121/355 patients as malnourished (34.1%; 95% CI: 29.3–39.2). When the screening step was retained and the definitions of reduced muscle mass and the etiologic criterion were varied, estimates ranged from 22.0% to 29.6%.
Conclusion: The two-step NRS-2002–GLIM approach classified 28.5% of patients as malnourished, whereas direct application of the GLIM criteria to the full sample classified 34.1%. Classification varied with the application approach and selected criterion definitions, supporting the need for standardized assessment procedures in hospital practice.
